1.)Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a 48-year old wife, mother of four and grandmother of 2 (soon to be three). I have a severe chronic pain history which developed as the result of a car accident in 1998. This accident turned out to be life changing. In 1998, I worked as a medical transcriptionist and taught piano lessons privately. As a result of chronic back and neck pain, I was forced to change careers. I had enjoyed making jewelry with my girls for several years and decided to list a few things. Etsy has worked out very well for me! I love the flexibility that allows me to work as much or as little as I want! In addition, I am currently an herbalist student at The School of Natural Healing. I am a Nutritional Herbalist currently and am working towards my Master Herbalist degree. I was able to overcome devastating withdrawal symptoms and control chronic pain symptoms with God's miraculous gift of the "herb of the field". I had such marvelous results that I spend much time studying herbs.

2.)What is one of your favorite homeschool memories thus far?

I am currently in my 5th year of homeschooling. It has been an absolute joy. I l ove the flexibility of homeschooling. My oldest three kids (27, 24, 22 years) graduated from the public schools. Although my girls did well in the public schools, I did not feel that my boys reached their full potential in that environment. I would say that my favorite memory is actually seeing the progress in learning--especially in the area of math. Very rewarding to look back and see how far we have come!

3.) What advise to would you give to other homeschool families who are also trying to run a home business?

Include your children if possible! My kids were older at the time, so this really wasn't possible for me, but I do have the memories of working together at the kitchen table with my kids on jewelry. The boys even did hemp necklaces at one time! My girls also have Etsy businesses: Jessica, a music major, has a jewelry business (newvintage.etsy.com) and Alexa, a fashion designer, has her fashion sketches currently listed on Etsy (whatheloves.etsy.com). In addition, my husband has an Etsy shop as well (rroyvision.etsy.com).

4.) Where do you find inspiration for your pieces?

I find inspiration for my jewelry all around, but I do believe it is important to just use others' work for inspiration only. I believe that duplicating someone's work exactly is totally unethical!

5.) Do you have specific goals for your business or for your homeschooling? Would you share some of those with us?

My youngest son is a senior this year, so this is my last year of homeschooling. I have enjoyed it very much. I really do not have a lot of specific goals at this time, as I am just trying to get through school. Long-term goals include the possibility of taking some of my jewelry to market, etc. I currently also have my jewelry in a boutique.

One of my favorite Christmas traditions is probably baking cookies. The whole house smells delicious for days and sharing the cookies is just an added bonus! Today, we have a sugar cookie recipe that was shared with us by one of our SHE Team members. I think you will enjoy it.

The Best Sugar Cookies Ever!

Yield 2 dozen

1 ½ c. powdered sugar
2 ½ c. flour
1 c. butter
1 tsp. baking soda
1 egg
1 tsp. cream of tarter
1 tsp. vanilla optional but hold dough
together better

1. Preheat oven to 375 F.
2. Cream powdered sugar, butter, egg, and vanilla.
3. Add flour, baking soda, and cream of tarter.
4. Roll dough out and cut with cookie cutters.
5. Bake 375 10-12 min or until done.

Today's recipe comes from Donna. Donna is a member of the Schooling at Home Etsians as well as the owner and creator of Naturally Comfy, homeschooling mother of 4 and blogger.

According to her blog, this recipe is a family favorite. We hope you enjoy it as well.

Chicken Tetrazzini

¼ C butter or margarine
¼ C flour
½ tsp salt
¼ teaspoon pepper
1 C chicken broth
1 C whipping cream (half-n-half also works well)
2 Tbs sherry ( I use water)
1 package (7 oz) spaghetti, cooked and drained)
2 C cubed cooked chicken or turkey
1 can (3 oz) sliced mushrooms, drained (I leave these out and it's fine)
½ C grated Parmesan cheese

Heat oven to 350*F. Melt butter in large saucepan over low heat. Blend in flour and seasonings. Cook over low heat, stirring until mixture is smooth and bubbly. Remove from heat. Stir in broth and cream. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Boil and stir 1 minute. Stir in wine, spaghetti, chicken and mushrooms. Pour into ungreased 2-quart casserole dish. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake uncovered 20 minutes or until bubbly.

1. Tell us a little about yourself.
I'm Kate, I live in Washington State, and my husband Chris and I run a fiber business and Etsy shop called Woolgatherings. We have 2 kids, ages 8 & 11, who have always been homeschooled.

2. How did you begin working in your craft and how did it develop into a business?

The fiber business was started over 25 years ago by my mother-in-law, and I took it over about 3 years ago, when she decided to retire and my kids were getting old enough to afford me a little free time. I have been working with fiber in various forms since I was a teenager, with her mentorship, so it was just a natural fit. At first it was just a hobby - I was primarily a SAHM just dyeing fiber occasionally for a couple of her long-time customers - but I started selling on Etsy in late '09 and since then, the business has really grown into a full-time job.

3. What is one of your favorite homeschool memories thus far?
My kids and I love to travel, so most of my favorite memories are of being with my kids out and about exploring the world. There is something so exciting about taking in a new environment, and being able to see it through the eyes of a child. It makes me feel like a child myself, in a way, because everything we are seeing is new to me too, and we are learning together.

One of the most amazing places we have ever visited was Kangaroo Island, off of the coast of South Australia - a fairly wild and unspoiled place with an abundance of wildlife and natural beauty. I will never forget driving way out in the bush and coming to a screeching halt to let a spiny echidna cross the road. My kids, especially my daughter, are huge animal lovers and they were *SO* excited to see this elusive nocturnal animal out in broad daylight, in its native environment. There was just something so magical about that moment, and that day, that always make me smile.

4. What advice would you give to other homeschool families who are also trying to run a home business?
It's a day to day challenge to make all of the pieces fit together, and some days work better than others. It helps to be organized – technology is your friend! Of course the kids come first, and for me, this means that fun comes first. No matter how busy I am, I have a little rule with myself that I don’t turn down an opportunity for fun if it presents itself to me.

5. Where do you find inspiration for your pieces?My work is all about color, and most of my inspiration comes from nature, art, and architecture. I am always looking around and watching how colors work together and play off of each other. I take tons of photographs, and again, I love to travel and immerse myself in new environments.

6. Do you have specific goals for your business or for your homeschooling? Would you share some of those with us?

My goal for homeschooling is to really nurture my kids love of life and learning. We have always unschooled, though as they get older, their interests have led them to take a few more structured classes, and we are adapting to those changes as they come. For the future, I just hope that they can find what they are passionate about and are able to pursue it. For my business – I am happy with where it is right now, but someday I would love to have my husband come work with me full time.

Sugar Roasted Peanuts

This is one of our favorite fall snacks. My mom has made these for years and they are usually gobbled up before the evening meal is served.

If you have small children, they will enjoy watching the last few minutes of boiling as the sugar re-crystallizes onto the peanuts. So gather round the family kitchen and cook up a new family tradition!

Ingredients:
2C Sugar
1C water
4C dry raw peanuts

Instructions:
In a large saucepan mix all ingredients. Bring the mixture to a boil and stir every 5-10 minutes. Continue boiling and stirring until the water is COMPLETELY dissolved and the sugar re-crystallizes onto the peanuts. (Around 30 minutes)

Immediately remove the peanuts from the stove and pour into well grease baking sheets or 9x13 casserole dishes. Bake at 300 for 30 minutes stirring every 10 minutes.

Allow to cool, then enjoy!

Tell us a little about yourself.

I'm a Christian, homeschooling mom of four kids ages 17, 15, 13 and 11. This is my fourth year homeschooling, and it seems to get better and better! As with most things in my life, I seem to do things opposite of most everyone else! Seems many stop homeschooling for high school and that's when we started! It's been an eye opening and extremely rewarding experience for my children and me. I now only wished we had started from the beginning.

Before homeschooling, my children were disconnected. They loved each other, but didn't really ever play together. Separate lives so to speak. Once we started homeschooling, our whole family dynamics changed. We are now a very close knit family. I love knowing what's going on in their lives and sharing those experiences with them.

So who's the man behind the scenes? I am married to a wonderful husband who thankfully encourages me through all of my many whims and hobbies. In fact he's the one who got me started with sewing. Love him.

How did you begin working in your craft and how did it develop into a business?

I started creating and designing things as a child, but only started sewing when I was in my early 20's after my husband bought me a sewing machine. It was love at first stitch.
I have a close "relationship" with my seam ripper. One day after Christmas last year, I was using my friend the seam ripper and it gave me an idea to start a blog on sewing and crafting. I wanted it to be a "real" blog about my successes and failures of my sewing adventures. A blog to encourage others to not give up, but be determined to persevere, even if you sew the sleeve on backwards 3 times. While working on projects for my blog Sew Determined, my friends started asking me to make things for them. One thing led to another and that's how my Etsy shop "Call Me Cordelia" all started. It's still in in it's beginning stages and I'm slowly adding new things bit by bit. I enjoy sewing pretty, feminine things that I would love to have.

What is one of your favorite homeschool memories thus far?

One of my favorite homeschool memories thus far has been our trip to Boston to walk the Freedom trail. We studied American History together as a family and it really brought all those biographies and stories to life. It was fantastic to hear the kids remembering all the things we had studied and to see them thoroughly engaged and interested.

What advice would you give to other homeschool families who are also trying to run a home business?

I am by no means a seasoned homeschooler or business woman, but my advice would be to put your family first and definitely keep a schedule for your business. That was my first mistake. Not keeping a schedule for my business. I tend to be a "free spirit" and that does not work for long. I've done a great deal of reading of others success stories and they all seem to have one thing in common. Order. Making a workable schedule and sticking to it.

Where do you find inspiration for your pieces?

I am a huge fan of literature and I find my inspiration from the stories I read. For example, the name of my Etsy shop, Call Me Cordelia, is after Anne of Green Gables. If I'm feeling in a slump, I simply read one of my favorite classics and it always inspires me to make something I love. For example, I made this toile handbag after reading Sense and Sensibility.

Do you have specific goals for your business or for your homeschooling? Would you share some of those with us?

One of my goals is to have my business become more of a family affair. My youngest daughter loves to help me, but I would really enjoy having all of my children participate in the creative process one way or the other. Being an entrepreneur is a wonderful way to teach hands-on "school" to your children.

My other specific goals include, growing my blog, gaining FB and twitter exposure and really learning how to schedule my time to it's fullest.

1. Tell us a little about yourself.
I'm an introvert gladly surviving the chaos & noise of a houseful of children...a wife to the best man for the job...a daughter & sister & friend to a lovely bunch of people...a Christian trying to deepen my own faith & impart that to my family...a lover of creating, singing, music, & the written word...a woman trying to find the highly sought after balance of being all these things in one person. Many days it's an epic failure, sometimes I get it right...Most of the time I'm somewhere in between!

2. How did you begin working in your craft and how did it develop into a business?
My craft is really a mix of a few different crafts I love: painting & crochet. I've done both off & on in the past, often setting them aside for the next baby born or a particularly busy season of life. I really began toying with the thought of opening an Etsy shop when one of my friends opened hers & was having some success. It was easy & inexpensive to get one started, I had more than enough supplies to get going, & most of all I felt I would benefit from a more consistent creative outlet. As a single-income home educating family, any extra money would be appreciated & useful, too, of course! So I began to try to think of something unique that I could offer to the Etsy community. What came to mind is what ended up being the main focus of my shop, TrueRubyDesigns: Modern Crochet Wall Art.

3. What is one of your favorite homeschool memories thus far?
My favorite moments are usually the times that my kids have had a real breakthrough in something they've struggled with. In particular, I have one child who really struggled to learn to read & spell due to various obstacles (vision problems & possible learning disabilities). When it became clear to me that the methods I'd used before weren't a good fit for him, I trusted my instincts & backed off of all formal instruction in those areas. I didn't want reading to become a hated chore! Instead of the usual route, all I required was that he read to me from any book he chose for 15 minutes daily. We kept at it in that fashion for nearly a year & a half! I distinctly remember the first time my son sat reading a book just for fun. Not just looking at the pictures, but actually reading a chapter book just because he wanted to! I even took a picture! That has to be my most fulfilling moment...at that moment I realized that I really did know what was best for my own children. I gained a lot of confidence in my homeschooling, enough that now I don't fear going "off book", so to speak. I am not chained to the instructor's guide or to any particular curriculum. I pick & choose what works best for each of my children, & I realize that that will be different for each one.

4. What advice would you give to other homeschool families who are also trying to run a home business?
My best advice would be to keep your priorities in order! I've had to pray for help in this area myself, as I tend to get wrapped up in a project & want to focus all my time & energy on that goal. I never want my children or my husband to feel that they play second fiddle to my shop! My ideal way of keeping my priorities in order is to set aside a specific time for creating & for working on the computer. I also try to snatch up any lulls in my day, but I have to be flexible, knowing that the kids needs could call me away. The majority of my work has been custom pieces, which require a lot of communication with the buyer & a lot of time to create unique designs. Before, I was working non-stop & shipping an order in a few days! I've just begun to tell buyers to allow a week for completion of a custom item, so that I can schedule time to create without it taking over my schedule completely.

5. Where do you find inspiration for your pieces?
Some of the items I've created have been inspired by the colors I love...as it says in my shop profile, I love using color to make ordinary things extraordinary! A lot of my ideas come to me as I'm falling asleep...I often make note of an idea by the light of my iPhone at night, so I don't forget it by the morning! As for my custom items, I ask the buyer for images of items they have or love & I use those as a springboard for a distinctive design. For example, several of my custom signs have been inspired by the children's bedding! I try to make an item feel like it belongs in a room while still making it one-of-a-kind & unique.

6. Do you have specific goals for your business or for your homeschooling? Would you share some of those with us?
I'd love for TrueRuby to become a reliable source of income to our family...I feel blessed to be able to earn money doing something I love while still being able to be home & present with my children. My short-term goals for the business include getting some more items in my shop that are ready-to-ship, & also learning how to make the most of my time & effort in promoting my shop.

My homeschooling goals this year...I'd love to actually make it through the entire stack of books! I'm excited for this year's studies, even though I'll have more little ones than ever before. Our materials this year are more eclectic than ever, but I feel confident that we've got a great year ahead of us. My goal for myself as a teacher is to read aloud to my children every day. As for the kids...I've got a 7th grader who needs to step up to another level of study in preparation for high school & college level academics; a 5th grader who is also making a jump in his level of study & comprehension of more complex ideas; a beginning reader who I hope to help transition into a fluent reader; a 4 year old bundle of energy to guide & occupy; a 2 year old who will be learning how to quietly play during school; & a baby who will be on my lap as I do it all. I can hardly wait to begin! Just don't ask me to be as enthusiastic in February... :)

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I'm a Catholic Australian homeschooling Mother to 4 children aged 11, 5, 4 and 2. I love and practice a wide variety of crafts including embroidery, sewing, dyeing, quilting, decoupage.. should I go on?!

How did you begin working in your craft and how did it develop into a business?
Many years ago my mother in law gave me an old biscuit tin full of embroidery threads and cloths that she never had time to complete. The tin sat around and followed me from place to place until finally, after the birth of my second child I decided to give it a try.
My etsy shop came about as an attempt to earn some pocket money to keep crafting!

The magic of a child who discovers they can read is always a highlight for me.

Team Member Interview - Heidi of The Blissful Stitcher

Today I would like to introduce you to Heidi of The Blissful Stitcher.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I homeschool a 13-year-old, an 11-year-old and a five-year-old. They are both the biggest frustration and the greatest joy in my life.

I'm married to the man who was the high school boy I had a crush on in jr. high. We celebrated our 16th wedding anniversary this year.

I am an RN. Until spring of this year, I worked as an IV Therapist at a hospital near my home. I have worked as a nurse in IV therapy, medical-surgical and medical-telemetry units for nearly 10 years. In nursing school, I told anyone who would listen that I would not be working in a hospital. My life is full of such irony.

I have used various art mediums. My favorites are watercolor, pen and ink, charcoal, beads, photography and embroidery. I hope to revisit watercolor in the next few months.

How did you begin working in your craft and how did it develop into a business?

I started out making gifts. I suppose they were gifts I would like to receive. When customers began to order variations of these gifts, I was thrilled.

What is one of your favorite homeschool memories thus far?

I find it interesting that my favorite homeschool moment is tied to my least favorite. I took a few years to find the right math curriculum for my daughter. She struggled mightily with programs that had a spiral learning path. The first three programs we tried left us both hating math. Every time multiplication showed up on a lesson, she flailed, floundered, and fought against it. Since multiplication is such a foundational skill for all math, I finally found a curriculum that focused on teaching the why and how of multiplication before moving to more complex problems.

Half-way through the year, she came running to me with her math book. I was sure her news had nothing to do with the math because her face was shining. Before I could ask her why she was so happy, she burst out, "This REALLY WORKS! I can multiply sixes, and I know WHY!"

What advice would you give to other homeschool families who are also trying to run a home business?

Set a specific time for marketing and crafting. I talked over my schedule with my husband. He had excellent insight. We decided I would "go to work" during specified hours. This reduced a number of problems we were having with household duty responsibilities and reduced the number of interruptions from bored children.

Marketing is a great big mystery to me. I am soaking up information from the etsy blog and from the examples of etsians I admire. I plan to have a discussion with my husband about my marketing plan. He is a great sounding board.

Where do you find inspiration for your pieces?

Ideas live in my head long before they become pieces. I'll tuck something into the back of my mind and save it for a while. I have a vast collection of embroidery designs of all kinds. I keep these designs in mind while going about my day. Add to this the rush I get from figuring out the solution to a design problem. The challenge may be maddening, but when the product comes to fruition, that high can carry me for a few weeks of crafter's block.

For my business, I want to use up and sell my current stock before I purchase more.
For our school, I would like to finish up a few subjects from last year before I purchase more.

1. Tell us a little about yourself.

I am first a daughter of the Mighty King and a lover of my Salvation. I am a wife to my best friend and mother to three awesome and fun-loving teenagers.

2. How did you begin working in your craft and how did it develop into a business?

Our little headcovering business started after learning about headcovering and subsequently being convicted to headcover. I started making mob caps, Amish kapps, and Israeli tichels. With time, I began offering many other styles of headcoverings such as snoods, extra-wide headbands, Bethany veils, etc. We also opened a blog , where we discuss not only headcovering in general but also interview women who headcover. These interviews can be read here . Over time, we began to address the lack of modesty in today’s culture and have since pursued this issue hoping to encourage, educate, and inspire women and men to examine not only their dress but also their hearts. We have since branched out in the social media arena and can also be found on Facebook , and Twitter .

3. What is one of your favorite homeschool memories thus far?

My favorite homeschool memory would be a family trip we took to Yellowstone National Park. We saw, learned, and experienced so much more than books could ever attempt to teach us. We spent uninterrupted time together laughing, loving, and making memories that will last forever.

4. What advice would you give to other homeschool families who are also trying to run a home business?

First, knowing what your priorities are in your life is essential. Secondly, committing to spend a determined amount of time on these priorities is of equal importance. For example, a typical school day will begin with Scripture reading, devotion, and prayer. We then move on to chores, breakfast and school. Later during the day, I will work on the business. I’ve realized that if there is an imbalance in my priorities, then my spiritual life, family life, and business suffer. I would also like to mention that though there is time and effort that needs to be poured into one’s business, it is ultimately God who brings the sales. He remains our provider in all things.

5. Where do you find inspiration for your pieces?
My inspirations usually comes from the practicality and need that I see within the community of headcovering women.

6. Do you have specific goals for your business or for your homeschooling? Would you share some of those with us?

Yes, my goals for the business are two-fold. First, it would be to generate enough profit from the business to pay for some of the household and homeschooling expenses. Secondly, I would like to teach our children that creativity and initiative are some of the main ingredients for creating a source of income.

CHEMO HEADCOVERINGS

Not too long ago, I felt the LORD’s prompting to begin making headcoverings for individuals who have suffered hair loss, whether because of chemotherapy or other medical reasons. My intent is to offer them at a reasonable price so that they would be available to everyone. Medical costs are often unimaginably high, even with the help of insurance. So once again, with the prompting of our LORD, our chemo headcovers are available free of charge to individuals who otherwise could not afford one. I find that it is extremely important to live one’s life with an open hand, giving to everyone according to their need and according to what God has provided to you. Though the name of our business, Sowers of Hope, was initially the name of our first ministry, we decided to use the same name once again because of the message it brings with it. It is based on Isaiah 40:31 “ but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.“ Using this verse as the basis of our business, we wanted to remind everyone that placing their hope in the LORD is the only place that lasting restoration can be had.
Our chemo headcovers are currently available in this Etsy shop , but we plan to move them over to our main headcovering Etsy boutique very soon.

An easy, comforting recipe that is perfect for summer meals!

Creamy Ranch Corn Salad

1 (16 oz) package frozen whole kernel corn, partially thawed OR 2 cans drained whole kernel corn
1-2 cloves garlic, minced
2-3 chopped green onions
1 medium tomato, seeded and diced
1/2 cup diced red or green pepper
1 cup bottled ranch dressing (more or less according to taste)

Gently combine all ingredients. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. Enjoy!

My name is Gretchen, I am a homeschooling mom of 3 and grandma of 1. I also work at a Ranch and Home Supply store on the weekends. I have been crocheting since I was 5 so that is nearly 40yrs now. I have been knitting for 8yrs and sewing for 16yrs. I also like to bake.

3. What is one of your favorite homeschool memories thus far?
I don't think there is one favorite I love every memory I am making with my kids.

Find a mentor for both endevours. It makes each one much easier.

I really want to make more in my business to take the burden off my husband so that we can have more free time and I don't have to have a weekend job outside the home. Tell us a little about yourself.
We live in Northwestern Connecticut. We enjoy being home and working in our garden.
We have two teenage daughters who have been homeschooling for six years. They both love animals enjoy taking care of their dog, cats, and goats. The hobbies I most enjoy are knitting, stamping, scrapbooking and photography. My husband’s hobby is woodworking. His grandfather made wooden toys and sold them at local craft fairs. He uses those pieces as inspiration for the toys that he makes. My girls also have an interest in photography and are always looking for interesting subjects to photograph.

How did you begin working in your craft and how did it develop into a business?
I started knitting shortly before my youngest daughter was born. I made clothes and toys for my girls and also as gifts for friends. For years my family and friends told me I should sell what I make, so one day I decided to give it a try. My husband has wanted to do the same with his woodworking projects.

What is one of your favorite homeschool memories thus far?

I have several favorite memories with the girls: reading a favorite book together, hiking and picking blueberries on a beautiful summer day, and occasional campouts in the living room on a “school night.”

What advise to would you give to other homeschool families who are also trying to run a home business?

Get the whole family involved. Include the kids in pricing, advertising, researching what to sell and helping to create the items in the shop.

Where do you find inspiration for your pieces?
My favorite items are baby items. I like a project that works up quickly. I’m drawn to things that are cute and fuzzy! I am currently working on a design for a bunny based on my favorite childhood toy.

Do you have specific goals for your business or for your homeschooling? Would you share some of those with us?
For my business, I would like to write and sell my own patterns. Homeschooling goals include raising girls who love to learn and be will be successful and happy doing what God has called them to do.

1. Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Sarah Howland and with the support of my Mom, I launched Sarah and Jane
last summer...at the age of 16! I am blessed to have a whole room devoted just for allowing my creative juices to run wild! When I am not sewing (which is not often) I enjoy devouring delicious books, hanging out with friends, and of course shopping for fabric. My love for reading is how the name "Sarah and Jane" came to be. One of my favorite authors is Jane Austen...hence the Jane.

2. How did you begin working in your craft and how did it develop into a business?
I first started sewing when I was very little. My first creations were extremely lopsided pillows. As I grew older, my Mom actually taught me and other young girls how to properly sew. I really enjoy sewing clothing and tote-bags, but as I scoured a blog one day I saw a free pattern for fabric covered notebooks. After much perfecting I came up with the first Sarah and Jane notebook.

3. What is one of your favorite homeschool memories thus far?

I do not just have one particular favorite memory, but several instances immediately come to mind. When I was younger, my Mom would read out-loud to my older brother and I. My imagination ran wild and I truly fell in love with literature. Who knows what reading out-loud can do?

4. What advise would you give to other homeschool families who are also trying to run a home business?
Make sure you have time! My Mom and I started our business in the summer before my junior year. Once school started my courses munched every last bit of my time. It was very hard to take time and simply sew or imagine new designs. Even now, I am restocking the store because my studies have finished.

5. Where do you find inspiration for your pieces?
Most of my inspiration comes from seeing and touching the fabric. I can just picture what the fabric could be. My Mom also gives me tons of ideas, along with magazines, Etsy, and blogs.

6. Do you have specific goals for your business or for your homeschooling? Would you share some of those with us?
I am very interested in marketing so Sarah and Jane was at first an experiment to test my skills. I could not have done it without my Mom! But, Sarah and Jane has become a way for me to express my creativity and it also gives me a glimpse of how much goes into a business. Potato Salad

Our family LOVES olives. A.Lot. And pickles. But mostly olives. So this recipe is perfect for us. Even if you don’t, this is an easy and fast potato salad! Just substitute the olives and pickles for something you DO enjoy… or simply leave them out.

Amazing Potato Salad

3 pounds potatoes
8 hard boiled eggs
1/2 cup chopped red onions
3/4 cup diced dill pickles
1/2 cup sliced black olives

Dressing:
1/4 cup mustard
2-1/4 cup mayonnaise or miracle whip
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt

Boil potatoes whole and unpeeled. Cool, peel, and cut into chunks. Peel, rinse and cut up the eggs. Toss the potatoes, eggs, onions, pickles and olives gently. In a separate bowl, mix the dressing ingredients. Add to the potato mixture and carefully stir to coat everything evenly. Keep refrigerated. Serves 8-10.

Running Around In Circles

You know, I assumed that the onset of summer would bring with it a peace, and quiet and rest. I was envisioning sparkling sand and salt water, picnic baskets and pink lemonade.

Alas, reality has ended my daydream. What was I thinking? After all, I am a mother of four. Two of my kids are teenagers - with jobs. One of those teenagers - with a job- does not even have her drivers license yet.

So instead of casual strolls at the beach, I am running circles around the city taking my four children to swim practice and choir practice and work and ...

Tell Us A Little Bit About Yourself.
I am a long time Alaskan (30 + years now) and love living in Eagle a remote town of 150 near the Canadian border. My husband and I have 4 children ages 10- 14 we have home schooled for 10 years. My husband is the pastor of Eagle Bible Chapel.

2. How did you begin working in your craft and how did it develop into a business?
I love creating and being home with our kids so Log Cabin Creations was born about 10years ago. I have been selling my hand crafted items at our local Eagle Mall for the last 8 years. I am thankful that my business has grown to equal almost half of our yearly income. I do a variety of crafts from jewelry making to knitting to creating knitting patterns to knotted trivets.

3. What is one of your favorite homeschool memories thus far?
We were able to take a 2 month road trip and visited 21 states as well as 3 Canadian provinces/territories, we had a great time and learned lots along the way.

4. What advise to would you give to other homeschool families who are also trying to run a home business?
I keep reminding myself that my focus is homeschooling and that my business comes second, my kids are going to leave home in a few short years and then I can dedicate more time to business.

5. Where do you find inspiration for your pieces?
I love the north so many of my pieces reflect the north or Alaska.

My goal for homeschooling is to create the love of learning within my children, if they are unable to list all the states and capitals that is okay...so long as they love to learn about new things and learn how to do new things or teach themselves with all the resources around us a new skill.

Today I'm posting an older post from my blog that is an important reminder for all of us homeschooling parents to not get too tied up in book work and enjoy our daily lives as educators!

I woke early this morning and decided to make some playdough. My 4 year old has been "somewhat challenging" of late and I wanted to get her busy straight after breakfast. Sometimes, as a homeschooler, I forget to stop and smell the roses. I forget that I'm in charge and that learning occurs in all different ways.

Normally I expect the boy to start his bookwork by 9am for time efficiency. This morning he took an interest in the playdough, and although my brain nagged at me - "it's past 9am!!" I left him to it.

This led to a few learning discussions. He made a model of a heart, which provided an opportunity for revision of the heart's functions. They made me countless "cupcakes" and "pancakes" and other delights.

They had to share in order to get along, this needs much reinforcement!

They learn to use kitchen tools which improves dexterity.

They learn to clean up after themselves when they're finished.

If you're a fellow homeschooler, or even if you're not, I hope you can find time to "go with the flow" today and remember that learning does not have to come from a book.

Julie Talks About Homeschooling and Homebusiness

Julie is the creative mind behind Third Eye Artisans and a member of Sheteam. Today Julie is sharing with us a little bit about herself and her Etsy shop.

I have been married for 27 years to a remarkable man and have 8 children, ages 32 to 12. I also have 3 perfect grandsons, who I am blessed to see several times a week. My homeschooling adventure began 24 years ago as a stop-gap for my oldest daughter, who I pulled out of public school, not because of a dissatisfaction with the school system, but because of peer pressure and influence. We had planned to home school her that first year until we could find a suitable, small private Christian school to enroll her in. As the Lord would have it, I took the plunge and never looked back. I have graduated 5 of my children with 2 still in school, but almost done. My youngest has Down syndrome so I expect my homeschooling of him will never end.
We live a not-so-quiet life on 10 acres in the country, a life that I am quite content with. I call the happenings around here "controlled chaos" because of animals, school, jobs, errands, lessons, college, home business, grandchildren, etc. I can't believe how undeservedly blessed I am.

I have been crafty my whole adult life, but especially since I started homeschooling. I think crafting is such an integral part of homeschooling for most folks. I have taught all of my daughters to crochet and knit but I am the one who really enjoys the designing and experimenting with color, texture, and technique. My stash of yarn keeps growing and growing as I find different yarn suppliers. Please!! I can't help myself! I started out making my items and simply giving them away as gifts to everyone. Many times for "just because". Finally, my family and friends suggested I try and sell the things I was creating. My oldest daughter has a very successful etsy shop and she really urged me to open my own. So, I did.....

You know, I have *so* many homeschooling memories but I have to say that one of my favorites is when, after spending what seemed like way too many grueling hours on phonics lessons with one son in particular, the light finally came on in his brain and he started reading. He's not stopped and is one of the best readers I know. It was an epiphany for me and a culmination of all those hours of toil, teaching a dyslexic child to read who might, otherwise, have been lost and forsaken in the public school system.

The best advice I can give, and have given, to any homeschooler trying to run a business is to not forget your priorities. It sounds cliche' but is so important. Anyone who looks at my shop can see I don't have monumental sales. It takes a lot of time to homeschool and a lot of time to run a business, as well. I can't do it all and neither can any homeschooling mom I know, although we try. The actual crocheting part of my business is easy because I do it while I'm schooling, during quiet time, and watching a movie in the evenings. But taking photos, writing descriptions, listing, etc. takes a lot of time and it's time that I'm not tending to household things so those etsy tasks don't get done as consistently as I'd like. For instance, right now I have about 20 new items that I need to list but I'm trying to get outside to photograph them, write descriptions, and get them listed. I try and work in the 20 minutes snippets of time I get here and there, rather than carving out a full 2 to 3 hours, which is nearly impossible. So, the new items wait, and sometimes wait a little longer. But I am at peace with where my shop is and where it's going. I'm mindful that there will be plenty of time later, maybe too much time, to devote to my shop. In the meantime, I do what I can, when I can.

Believe it or not, the inspiration for my pieces comes from inside my brain. I have *always* loved vivid color. I see a beautiful yarn and can picture in my head what to make with it. I tell a little story on my profile page about a first grade teacher who told me, and the whole class for that matter, that my Abraham Lincoln ditto sheet was not colored correctly because I didn't use black or brown but, instead, used every single color in my crayon box. In my little 6 year old brain, black and brown was boring and I wanted to see all the lovely colors that God has created in my picture. I've not changed much since then. Although I do use black and brown in some of my items, I mainly use bright, vivid colors and color combinations.

My main goal for homeschooling has basically remained unchanged all these years and that's to not focus on academics, although we all know how important that is. Rather, I want my children to be hard working, capable, common sense driven, other-oriented, people who know what they believe. I know many well intentioned homeschoolers who thought the whole reason for homeschooling was to just provide a better education than the public school and, although that is part of why we homeschool, it's not the main reason. So, for my husband and myself, if we've raised hard working people who value what God values, elevate others above themselves, and know what they believe, then we've succeeded.
As far as my shop, I would *love* to see my sales soar. We all know the feeling we get when a sale is made! I hope to see my sales continue on a steady course and as the Lord sees fit. As long as I can continue to create and give things to my family and friends, I'm happy.

Of all my children this one is definitely the most musical learner of the bunch. I think she was born singing - okay it was screeching at that young age - but she really has an ear for music and rhythms and tones and sounds.

She can watch her older sisters play the piano and will sit down and play a simplified version of it - with both hands. She remembers songs and melodies after only hearing them once! She is constantly singing or humming.

Other characteristics of musical learners include: tells you when music sounds off-key or disturbing in some other way, has a rhythmic way of speaking and/or moving, unconsciously hums to himself/herself, is sensitive to environmental noises (e.g., rain on the roof, crickets chirping), taps rhythmically on the table or desks as he/she works.

Some strategies to employ with musical learners:

•Have background music going while they are doing school work. Classical music works best for us.
•Linking old tunes with concepts

Family Recipes from Sheteam

My sister actually taught my second oldest how to make these oven crisped sandwiches. They have become a favorite in our house so I thought we would share them with you.

Ingredients List:

8-10 French rolls from the local deli

3-4 sweet large onions

10-12 ounces thinly sliced deli ham or turkey

8 ounces thinly sliced provolone cheese

1/3 C mayonnaise

1/3 C Dijon mustard

Preparations Instructions:

First slice the onions into thin rings and lightly sauté in butter or olive oil. There is no need to season the onions. While the onions are being sautéed slice the rolls into halves and set the tops and bottoms open faced on a cookie sheet. Set aside for later. Preheat oven 350 degrees.

To Prepare the bottom portion of the French Rolls.

In a small dish, mix 1/3 cup Dijon mustard with 1/3 cup mayonnaise. Using your fingers, scoop out a small portion of the bottoms of the French rolls and into the holes place 1 tablespoon of the sauce mix. On top of that place one slice of Provolone cheese and set this back on the cookie sheets.

To Prepare the upper portion of the French Rolls.

On the top portions of the rolls layer 1 piece of deli sliced meat and a good portion of the sauteed onions. Place these back on the cookie sheets.

Place both cookie sheets in the oven and allow the sandwich halves to cook until lightly golden. Serve while hot. YUM!

We have so many new members on "SHE"team and so many people asking about the team, that I thought I would take the time to introduce us. First of all, I would like to explain what "She" is not. We are not a particular religious group. Contrary to some popular beliefs, homeschooling is not always a religious choice. We are not anti-public school, in fact, several of our members have children in public school and children schooling at home. This is also not a negative group. One of the things I have come to love and appreciate about this team over the past couple of years is that the group as a whole is so supportive of each other and always has a word of encouragement to help the day along.

Now...on to what "She" is...Here is the team description as found on our team page.

Chocolate Cake!

Who loves chocolate cake? (ME!) Here are 2 of our favourite family recipes for you to enjoy.

125 grams butter

2 cups plain flour

2.5 teaspoons baking powder

2 eggs

1.5 cups milk

2 tablespoons golden syrup

3 tablespoons cocoa

1 cup sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla essence

2 teaspoons baking soda (bicarb)

Prepare a large cake tin (I used my fruit cake tin) with baking paper and oil or butter.

Melt butter and syrup. In a bowl sift flour, cocoa and baking powder.

Add the sugar and eggs, then vanilla, milk and baking soda, beat for 1 - 2 minutes.

Mix in the butter and syrup liquid, beat for less than 1 minute. Pour into tin, bake in a moderate oven for 35 - 40 minutes.

*Note - I ended up cooking mine for longer than stated as it was still gooey in the middle, so keep checking it with a skewer. I also covered the top of the cake with baking paper after the first 20 minutes of cooking to prevent burning or overcooking.

2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 cup plain yoghurt
3/4 cup cocoa
200g soft butter
1 & 1/2 tspn vanilla essence
1 tspn bicarb soda
1/4 tspn salt
3 cups SR flour
1 cup of hot, strong espresso OR 1 cup hot water with 3 heaped tspns instant coffee

Place all ingredients in this order in a food processor for 1 minute. Place in greased baking tin (2 loaf tins or 1 20cm tin)
Cook at 160 degrees (C) for about 1 hour, use a skewer in the middle to test for readiness.

This goes really well in the freezer.

Buttercream icing:

I usually beat a couple of tablespoons of butter until creamy, then gradually beat in icing sugar (and cocoa if you want chocolate icing- food colouring if you want it coloured) until it starts to get very thick. You can also add a small dash of milk to make it more creamy or to make a larger quantity so you can add more icing sugar without it being too dry.

This makes a really good. moist and flavoursome cake without being too rich or over the top.

Family crafty traditions

OK, so these are not our family traditions at the moment but I know they are for many families and I would certainly love to adopt more crafty traditions for my own family.

I'm told that many families make these "Ojo de Dios" or "God's Eyes" at Easter time. They are a pretty decoration to hang and steeped in tradition and history, so are a good opportunity to mix fun and knowledge. Also may be a good opportunity for you to dig into some of that gorgeous wool lurking in your stash!

We made ours following the tutorial here.

We also recently made these Waldorf Window Stars after I decided to stop gazing at Ann's beautiful creations and try some of our own!

These would make beautiful Christmas decorations but are so pretty and bring cheer to a window at any time. We followed this excellent tutorial. I believe the kite paper is easy to source in the U.S.A. - not so here in Australia but I did find it here.

Q. How long have you been crafting?
A. Just shy of 30 years now.

Q. Do you have childhood memories of a crafting success or failure?
A. My mom taught me to make granny squares when I was five. I remember making those! After mom taught me the basic stitches I took off and taught myself.

Q. Do you have your own workspace?
A. Yes and no :) I have a place in our living room that my grandparents created for me -- some shelves and baskets. But my crochet moves with me all over the place really!

Q. What inspires you to create new pieces?
A.Sometimes I have "creative surges" and all sorts of ideas just sort of come to me and then other times I see all the possibilities in the Crochet magazines and online and such and that will set me off on some more ideas! I have a whole stack of old patterns and magazines that I go through once in awhile and see what there is to make...or remake. I have just recently started trying to create my own patterns.

Q. Are you currently home schooling?

A.Yes

Q. What challenges do you face when combining home schooling and home
business?
A. Well, sometimes I find it hard to spend the time online promoting my business as much as it needs so my shop sales fluctuate quite a bit.

Q. What advantage do you think you have by combining homeschooling and
home business?
A. As my kids have gotten older, it is easier to crochet in between other things and in the evenings when everyone has gone off to bed.

Q.Do you have a favorite curriculum or style of teaching?
A. We have used mostly ABEKA but in the past few years have started "picking and choosing" some other things as well. My high school son is enjoying WordSmith for grammar this year and we have been using Apologia science for a couple years now and love it.

Q. What is your education background?
A.I am a homeschool graduate :) and have schooled my own children for 12 years....so the school of re-runs?!?! :)

Q. Did you do other work before you began selling your handmade arts
or crafts?
A. I am a wife and stay-at-home mom of 5, we home school and I am nanny for my nephew 3x a week.

Q. Why did you choose to start your home business?

A.I have had different little shops here and there where I was able to sell some of my handmade items but when we moved I found out about Etsy and it sounded like a great opportunity so, I gave it a try and I LOVE it! :)

Q. Do you have a favorite Quote or Verse?
A. One of my favorite verses is Proverbs 3:6 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path."

A.Yes....well, at least 3 or 4 actually - HA! One that I'm reading....just for fun...is The Red River of the North Series by Lauraine Snelling.

Homeschooling Fun!

One of the beauties of homeschooling is that you don't have to adhere to a tight schedule and listen for the sound of a bell that tells you to abandon what you're doing and move on to something else. There is also the freedom to allow the child to be in charge of their own learning so that they can study what is truly interesting to them.
Then there's the fun! Your home is the most comfortable learning environment for your child and there is always so much to do, so much to learn and so much fun to be had.

Our Team Captain is Linda. Linda is a California resident, a homemaker, a homeschooling mother, and a talented jewelry artist. Her shops are Mom Potter and Ocean Breeze. There are four writers for our team blog so I will tell you a bit about each.

First is Kelly of The Handmaden . Kelly specializes in hand dyed fine silks and handmade dolls. Kelly uses her blog to show her creativity and introduce new project. She also shares a little about her life as a wife, mom and artist in Australia.

Our second blogger is Karista also known as KLow. She is a busy artist who has two shops on Etsy. Her crafts and cards shop is filled with gorgeous handmade cards as well as paper supplies, while her Sugar Yarn shop features gorgeous knit and crochet items. Even though she is a wife and mother of four as well as an Etsy artist, Karista still finds time to share new ideas on her blog - CardNCrafts. I also enjoy her homeschool blog. Section 1 Tell Us About Your Crafting
1. How long have you been crafting?

Forever, but jewelry specifically since late 2007. I was blessed in elementary school to have a phenominal art teacher. Mrs. Runnels let us experience everything
from coiling, glazing and firing pottery - to batiking fabric and carving our own lino cuts.
The broad discovery of techniques in grade school led to a life long love of art. I arrived at creating jewelry in a roundabout way. Photography was my primary artistic outlet, and became even more a focus on the birth of my first child. Scrapbooking entered the scene, and not content to just slap the pictures on the page, each one had to have handmade embellishments, too. At that time, wire embellishments were just gaining in popularity - it was so pretty on the page it made sense to turn it into jewelry as well. I've always loved working with color - and the amazing array of gemstones available results in an almost endless palette to work with.

2. Do you have childhood memories of a crafting success or failure?

When I was in first grade I won first place in the Indianapolis 500
Art Festival for an oil crayon drawing of an iris. I wore a super
frilly lavender dress loaded with ruffles to accept my big blue ribbon
on stage at the Childrens' Museum of Indianapolis. Let's just say my
fashion sense has changed since then...but I still love Irises!

3. Do you have your own workspace?

I'm supposed to, but to my husband's chagrin I have something jewelry related in almost every room of the house...I fuse on the stove top in the kitchen, heat
harden my argentium in the oven, tumble pieces in the bathroom, ship
from the dining room...the only place there probably isn't something
jewelry related is in the kids' rooms - and if there is something
there, they need to put it back.

5. What inspires you to create new pieces?
Most of my pieces start with a focal stone and evolve organically from there. I'm constantly trying new techniques and wanting to learn better methods to create
the multitude of ideas I have floating around in my head. Every once
in a while I'll see a striking color combination or shapes and
patterns in nature that I try to capture in a piece.

Section 2 Tell Us About Your Homeschooling Life

1. Are you currently home schooling?
If so how many and what ages/grades? I'm currently homeschooling three children, ages 10, 7 and 6. We work to abilities instead of grade levels.

2. What challenges do you face when combining homeschooling and home
business?
Time management - finding enough time in every day to
conquer school, household tasks, and business issues is a constant
battle. Most days - the housework loses....

3. What advantage do you think you have by combining homeschooling and
home business?
If we weren't homeschooling, I probably would not have
survived the crazy rush on personalized family tree necklaces I
received between Thanksgiving and Christmas - Since we homeschool our
schedule can be more flexible and relaxed during peak business times.
We take December off, but are still going strong through July, so it
all works out.

4. Do you have a favorite curriculum or style of teaching? We're
unschoolers/ interest based learners - I just sent my oldest off to
grandma's with a vintage camera and a basic lesson on using it - we'll
get the film developed and talk about color theory, the science and
chemistry of photography, the technical aspects of things like
aperture and depth of field, with charts and math rolled in.

1. What is your education background?
I have a BA in Psychology, which I completed the year after my son was born.

I've been home with the kids since my first child was born - other than a very brief stint as a scrapbook consultant (it was good for discounted supllies even if I didn't sell anything to anyone else!) I'm blessed to say no.

3. Why did you choose to start your home business?
After my husband's second job loss in less than five years, if I wanted to continue to pursue my 'hobby' I had to make it pay for itself - it morphed and
grew from there! I'd love to get to the point where we can pursue the
business as our primary source of income and my husband can handle the
'office' side of things so I can just make things...sigh, that seems a
long way off right now.

4. Do you have a favorite Quote or Verse?
Jeremiah 29:11 is my favorite verse - 'For I know the plans I
have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to
harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." '

5. Are you currently reading a book?
We'll be moving soon, so I'm reading 'Home Rules' by Nate Berkus so that I've got some guidelines for redecorating. I love that he emphasizes the use of color and
makes suggestions about where to splurge in your budget and where you
can cheat and go cheap but still get a great look.

A Home School/Home Business Success Story

I am really excited to bring this interview to you today. As a homeschooling mother of four, it is always encouraging to me to hear the success stories of other homeschool families. It is even more encouraging to see the children, who have been homeschooled, grow up and move out into the world and be successful. Here is one of those encouraging stories. I hope you enjoy...

Tell Us About Your Crafting
Q - How long have you been crafting?
A - TemporaryTrappings is a combined family endeavor which includes myself - Ashley,
my mom, Caroline, my two younger sisters, Sarah and Julie and even our grandma, who helps us work our booth at craft shows. My great-grandma often crafted and passed along a lot of her supplies to her grandchildren (my mom), including some really cool sequins and beads that we still have. My mom began crafting during her teen years, learning to sew, cross stitch, and then jewelry making. When my sisters and I were young she would make our dresses and pajamas. As we grew up, she passed on her love of crafting to my sisters and I. Decorative painting remains one of her greatest passions and combining that with jewelry making is where her current interest is. Christmas ornaments will always be a big part of her crafting as well. 2011 marks about 28 years of our combined crafting experience as a family, and we have big plans for our crafting business in 2011! We each have our areas of interest: Ashley, jewelry and clay; Sarah scrapbooking and paper crafting; Julie, jewelry and metal working.

Q - Do you have childhood memories of a crafting success or failure?
A - The one event that I can remember as a child which really started my crafting journey was learning how to macramé. My mom taught herself because I wanted to learn how, and after she mastered it, she taught me. I remember spending one whole day (which seemed forever when you’re ten years old!) trying to get the hang of all those knots. I turned my new skill into a salvation bracelet that included a little poem about the symbolism of the colors of each of the crosses that were knotted within the bracelet. Another memory which we all share is all of the craft shows that we have done over the years. Whether or not we participated in them, they were always a family event and are great places to get those creative juices flowing.

Q - Do you have your own workspace?
A - Any flat surface fills our needs. haha

Q - Could you tell us about it?
A - Actually, we do have a room on the second floor of our house that is dedicated to housing all of our crafting supplies and tools. More often than not, what ends up happening is we go “shopping” in our craft room, take our goodies downstairs and end up making our pieces in various places around the house as we like being together as a family and there just isn’t enough workspace in the craft room. That is another one of our goals this year - to redesign our crafting room to better accommodate multiple crafters/projects. It just isn’t fun to have to clean up your project, completed or not, and then get it all back out again to work on it. Too much time is wasted with the set up and tear down and it can become discouraging.

Q - What inspires you to create new pieces?
A - Well each one of us has our own different interests, which inspire us to create our own unique pieces. For instance, my younger sister Julie is really into the vintage, steampunk style. She loves all things that have to do with the Renaissance and learning how things work, and is teaching herself how to cut out charms from metal. Right now she’s working on designing jewelry for a local band called Summit Grove, and in one of her pieces she throws her steampunk style in the mix by sewing cogs and gears onto this beautiful flower piece. It’s all about knowing what you like, and learning how to have your personal style come through in your work.

Your Homeschool Life

Q - Are you currently home schooling?
A - If so how many and what ages/grades? While I am currently in college, working on my BA, I was homeschooled during high school. My two younger sisters, Sarah and Julie are being homeschooled right now.

Q - What challenges do you face when combining homeschooling and home business?
A - Being homeschooled was a wonderful experience. It allowed me the time to work at the pace I needed to learn at, while giving me extra time to spend with family, friends and on finding my hobbies. The one thing that I, and I know the rest of my family deals with, is the struggle with staying on schedule. When you spend a lot of time at home, it is easy to let yourself fall into the project/subject at hand, which can consume your day if you don’t have a set “length of time” for it. This seems to be a blessing and a hindrance of schooling at home. Your day is your own and allows you to study what you want, at your own pace. Consistently using a planner has helped us tremendously! Once you learn to conquer the schedule and make time for the things that need to get done, everything else falls into place.

More About Yourself
Q - What is your education background?
A - After graduating from a long distance, high school education program in the spring of 2008, I began working on my Bachelor’s. Right now I am in my junior year and am a full-time student.

Q - Did you do other work before you began selling your handmade arts or crafts? If yes, what was it?
A - Along with spending any extra time we have crafting, Sarah and I both work part time jobs in a book store, (just can’t stay away from books … lol) and our family helps out friends with babysitting during the week as needed. Prior to coming home full time to raise our family my mom worked in advertising and desktop publishing. Both of these skills have helped in our home crafting business.

Q - Why did you choose to start your home business?
A - After tagging along to a few craft shows that my mom participated in while I was in high school, I realized that we needed a way to get our crafts online. I eventually found Etsy.com and it wasn’t long before our shop was up and running.

Q - Do you have a favorite Quote or Verse (or both if you wish to share)

Q - Are you currently reading a book? If so, what is it and would you recommend it to others? Why or why not?
A - I (Caroline) just finished reading Choosing to See by Mary Beth Chapman and I highly recommend it! In fact, I liked it so much I purchased our own copy and my daughters are all taking turns reading it. It is a book that teaches us that we can have our *plans* for our life, but in the end, God’s path for us may not be the one that we chose, but it is the one that takes us to the places we need to visit, willingly or not, and the grace to see us through difficult situations, sustaining us when it becomes too hard, and seeing us through to the other side of it, healing us along the way. I truly admire Mary Beth and her family for the gift of this book, as painful as it was to write, but the blessing of the book for them and for anyone that reads it is a gift that keeps giving as the need to reread it will undoubtedly come up. And I did enjoy Mary Beth’s honesty about her personal faults…many of which I share with her, thinking I was the only one quirky like that.

For the month of December we decided to take a more relaxed approach to school and spent a large part of our time studying Christmas Around the World. Here is the final post from a series of posts we did focusing on this special time of year.

Christmas Wrap-Up

Now that the New Year is here, I decided I should take some time to wrap up our Christmas Around the World posts. While in America most of us have begun putting away our holiday regalia, in Siberia and elsewhere the holiday season has just begun. So here's the rest of what we learned this Christmas....We can still have a fruitful year even if our wheat didn't grow 6 to 8 inches. We were amazed how quickly it grew at all.My version of the Croatian Licitar Heart is neither dough nor edible, but it does have a "mirror" of aluminum foil to reflect the soul.Babuska may be a legend in parts of Russia (La Befana in Italy), but a good friend in Siberia has never heard stories of her. She does make a cute ornament, though.

And for the food...Bolivian Bunuelos- These are a more Puerto Rican style, but I look forward to trying authentic Bolivian Bunuelos someday.Puerto Rican Pasteles- Not sure the masa I made out of pumpkin, green bananas, plantains, potatoes and yucca was quite right, but the filling was delicious. Again, I'd love to try authentic pasteles in the future.Tanzanian Green Beans & Potatoes- A yummy version of potato salad that I will have to make again, though next time I may go for smaller veggies.
Philippino Pancit Bihon- An excellent recipe and a crowd pleaser. This may become a regular at our house.Croatian Braid Bread- So good! This tangy, sweet bread is a treat I hope to make more in the future. It is wonderful breakfast bread.
Russian Tea & Cakes- Excellent and a favorite even before this Christmas, albeit not Siberian necessarily. Alex sent us some favored Siberian salads that we will have to try soon.American Green Bean Casserole- It wouldn't be the holidays without it, right?

Q:How long have you been crafting?

A:I have loved art since I was a child and have been crafting my whole life. I got into stamping and paper crafts 5 years ago.

Q:Do you remember any craft successes or disasters from childhood?

A:I won a poster contest in the 5th grade.

Q:When did you decide to sell your handmade items on Etsy and why?

A:My husband created a website to sell my items from in 2006 but when I discovered Etsy in March 2007 I started selling my items there instead hoping to get more exposure. I decided to sell my handmade items because I would rather them be with someone that can use them and it would be nice to make some extra money too.

Q:How long have you been homeschooling?

A:Since my daughter was in pre-k. She is in 7th grade now. I was also homeschooled for high school

Q:How many children do you homeschool?

A:1 my 12 year old daughter

Q:What methods/curriculum do you use?

A:I have always used Calvert with my daughter which is a pre-packaged classical curriculum.

Q:What do you find difficult about homeschooling and running a home business?

A:Having enough time to make things since school comes first.
Q:What do you find rewarding about homeschooling and running a home business?

A:Being home with my daughter and getting to spend all this time with her.

Random typical homeschooling day

I saw on another blog a homeschooler challenging homeschool bloggers to post their average day minute by minute. I honestly considered it, but just didn't have that much energy (shame on me) for a complete day. And in typical fashion I can no longer find the original blog to link back to it. Blech. I do read other homeschooling blogs for inspiration, ideas and just to feel like not everyone is perfect! I love seeing other people's school rooms or work areas, so I am sharing ours on a typical day, i.e., I didn't clean it up first!

Our space was a dining room in a former life, like before kids and homeschooling. I love that we have tons of light through 2 windows and a sliding door. And, well, that same light makes for a bad photo from the angle I used. Oh well. The littles can be out on the play structure too, and I can see them while supervising the ones inside. The desk belongs to DS age 8, DS age 5 at the table on the far end and DD age 3 bops from her coffee table full of work boxes and a space at the table for coloring. DD age 4 months likes a sunny patch on the floor for her tummy time now days. The computer and my area are on the far right in the photo.

A:I can pull back when I need to and not answer to anyone else about why I need to. If I need to put in more time with my son I can cut down on the amount of creating and listing I do and when I feel like his needs are met I put some more in the creative pot.

A:Now I do , we just moved so its a work in progress. Most of supplies are in tall crafting drawers in my dining room so I have to clean up when I'm done. But looked forward to being able to close the door and leaving my stuff out so I ca can come back to it.

I like to gift the last one to myself.

Mud pies with worms for the kids!

Here is a fun holiday activity for the children - and the best part is it's edible!

We got the idea from "God's Design for Life - The World of Animals" by Debbie and Richard Lawrence (a most excellent set of Christian science books).

First, mix a packet of chocolate instant pudding according to the instructions on the packet. I don't usually go for this pre - packaged stuff, but it is quick and easy. You could substitute with home made chocolate mousse or similar if you don't like the packet stuff.

Crush some chocolate cookies (we used Chocolate Ripple biscuits).

Place some of the cookie crumbs in the bottom of a clear plastic or glass cup. On top of this, place a gummy worm so that it sits up a little.

Spoon the pudding mix in dollops and add another gummy worm if you want. Sprinkle a thick layer of cookie crumbs on top.

Refrigerate until set, then watch them disappear into waiting mouths!

The Thanksgiving Dinner

Once there lived a woman,
who was hosting her family Thanksgiving.

She cleaned for days and the house smelled so nice.

Dressed in her best, she welcomed her guests.

Herbs from her own garden formed the humble wreath on her door,as guests arrived bearing gifts to say Thank You to their hostess...

...and the food was...well...divine.

Just What the Doctor Ordered

I'll be keeping this post short and sweet.

My kiddos have been sick babies the past few days. Some with stomach virus, others with colds. ICK ICK ICK!!! So the
"Fun Theme" for today is
Just What the Doctor Ordered...(Dr. Mom that is)

1. Eat lots of colorful fruits and vegetables.

2. Take a nice warm shower with fragrant essential oils to help relieve the aches and pains of fever and to open up those bronchial tubes.

3. Get plenty of rest.

4. If you must go outside, be sure to bundle up. Keep those ears and that throat of yours covered and warm.

When Summer Turns to Winter

It is a regular practice of ours to commit various verses to memory. Be it scripture, parts of plays, historical speeches or poetry, we always feel such a sense of satisfaction when the work is memorized. This is one of our current poems and a few selections from the talented Sheteam.

Something Told the Wild Geese

Something told the wild geese
It was time to go.
Though the fields lay golden
Something whispered "Snow."

Leaves were green and stirring,
Berries, luster glossed,
But beneath warm feathers
Something cautioned "Frost."

All the sagging orchards
Steamed with amber spice,
But each wild breast stiffened
At remembered ice.

Something told the wild geese
It was time to fly-
Summer sun was on their wings
Winter in their cry.

No Tricks - Just Treats

OK, here is my Halloween confession. I have never been trick or treating - not even with my children. There, I said it!

I do, however, remember a trick or treat scene that is indelibly etched into my brain. It is the Halloween scene from Meet Me in St. Louis where the youngest, Tootie, goes out to "kill" a neighbor. In doing this, the children would knock on a neighbors door and chant "a very scary" chant, then throw a sack of flour into the neighbors face. Then, the children would make a run for it and fast!

Well, no such tricks here, only treats.

First we will need a bag in which to carry all these treats. For that we can visit MinnieMaes
This particular bag is made for tiny hands and will be perfect for carrying the Halloween stash. There are several different designs and sizes to choose from and MinnieMaes also carries similar totes for Mom's market trips.

Next we will need a costume. Now, here I go back to Meet Me in St Louis. The children dressed up in their fathers clothes and wore fake mustaches...

If you stay around her shop for just a little, you can also find a black cat, a spider, a ghost and a bat!

Finally, I can't leave out my favorite candy...CHOCOLATE.
Yes, I like dark chocolate, white chocolate, milk chocolate and mint chocolate and I found all of these goodies made by Julieandco

There, I think we are now ready for a fantastic evening of Trick or Treat.

When the Frost is on the Pumpkin

Here is a collection of SHE Team items inspired by the poem "When the Frost is on the Pumpkin" by James Whitcomb Riley (see the full poem here). This is a great poem I memorized as a child and have introduced to my children (we'll see if we work on memorizing it or not).
