No Tricks - Just Treats

OK, here is my Halloween confession. I have never been trick or treating - not even with my children. There, I said it!

I do, however, remember a trick or treat scene that is indelibly etched into my brain. It is the Halloween scene from Meet Me in St. Louis where the youngest, Tootie, goes out to "kill" a neighbor. In doing this, the children would knock on a neighbors door and chant "a very scary" chant, then throw a sack of flour into the neighbors face. Then, the children would make a run for it and fast!

Well, no such tricks here, only treats.

First we will need a bag in which to carry all these treats. For that we can visit MinnieMaes
This particular bag is made for tiny hands and will be perfect for carrying the Halloween stash. There are several different designs and sizes to choose from and MinnieMaes also carries similar totes for Mom's market trips.

Next we will need a costume. Now, here I go back to Meet Me in St Louis. The children dressed up in their fathers clothes and wore fake mustaches...
Ah Ha! I found these lovely disguises at Joosycardco.
How much fun is this?

Now for the treats, you can find candy corn at CellChic's Shop.
If you stay around her shop for just a little, you can also find a black cat, a spider, a ghost and a bat!

Finally, I can't leave out my favorite candy...CHOCOLATE.
Yes, I like dark chocolate, white chocolate, milk chocolate and mint chocolate and I found all of these goodies made by Julieandco

There, I think we are now ready for a fantastic evening of Trick or Treat.

Be safe out there and enjoy the holiday.

When the Frost is on the Pumpkin

Here is a collection of SHE Team items inspired by the poem "When the Frost is on the Pumpkin" by James Whitcomb Riley (see the full poem here). This is a great poem I memorized as a child and have introduced to my children (we'll see if we work on memorizing it or not).

Thanks to all of SHE Team for you continued contributions and a beautiful array of items for sale. Hope all your crafting, artistry and schooling efforts are going smoothly.

Got Goop?

Goop is fun, safe, reusable and although messy, cleans up easily.

1 packet of cornflour (I use a cheap generic brand)
1 - 2  cups water
food colouring, tempura paint powder or acrylic paint (if you like)

Mix water into cornflour a little at a time until you have a gloopy consistency. Drop the colouring in (if using) to the depth of colour you like.
Put into a container or tray and play!

When the children are finished it can be stored in a container with a lid. If it dries out just add more water and stir again. Or you can just leave it dry and use it like putty.

* A note about food colouring.
The children ended up with coloured hands, if this is undesirable go with the paint options.

Have fun with your goop!

Wood You?

There is a memory from childhood that evokes a sentimental journey, often at times when I least expect it. This memory is not a single occasion or even a particular scene or childhood dream, rather it is a smell.

My dad worked in a cabinet shop. When he returned home around dinner time every evening, my sister and I would rush out to be the first to hug daddy. It was then that we would be greeted with wide open arms and the smell of sawdust. Like the pine or oak from which he built beautiful things, Daddy's arms were stong and protective, yet gentle enough to bend to the winds of life and shade us from the heat and pressures that we would face.

For this reason, I am featuring today, items having to do with trees or made of wood by my fellow Sheteam members.

Wood you... take this sentimental journey with me?

Orange You Glad It's October

With the weather turning a bit cooler outside my door, I look forward to warm nights indoors crafting and enjoying my family. Here are a few things that make me think of the fresh fall season as the pumpkins turn orange in the garden.

SheTeam Inverview with MumMumCrafts

Tell us about yourself:
I’m a homeschooling mama of two with another on the way, due May 29th 2011! I love what I do, both in business and being a mom, and I would not have things any other way. I feel like one of the lucky people in this world who are actually able to do what I love each day!

What would we find in your shop:
Mineral Makeup, Deodorant, Lotion, Soap, Skin Care, Lip Tints and Balms. I am always adding new things and changing things up though, so you never know!

What is your style of Homeschooling:
I am not real strict! I do insist that a certain amount gets done each day but I am also flexible. If my kids want to focus more on science on some days we go with that, or if they really want to curl up and read we go with that, on top of the things that I insist get done, like math. We use Sonlight which is just the perfect curriculum for our family! We love to read!

What tip do you have for homeschooling while having an at-home business:
The biggest tip I have is to keep your priorities straight. My first priority is not my business; rather I run my business so that I can remain a homeschooling mom! I’ve set up boundaries to make sure my business does not consume too much time. For example I do not ship items every day, but within 3 business days. I do as many things as I can to keep my time organized, not always easy but really does help!

Centrioles and Mitochondria Oh, MY!!!

We are well into our second week of school here at the Verdant House and the two youngest are already eating their science experiments...

No worries. These giant cells and all their organelles are a yummy assortment of sweets. The only person to suffer will be me. It will happen in about 45 minutes when the sugar high has them bouncing off the walls.

Isn't Science Fun????

Well, it should be!
